A greater focus on animal health and welfare, reduction of antibiotics and carbon footprint of authorities and consumers is forcing breeders and producers to rethink their business.

In order to keep production performance high and costs low, while reducing antibiotic use, extra attention is needed for the health of the seeds.

E. coli is widely recognized to reduce sows’ milk yield and diarrhea outbreaks. Clostridium perfringens is another crucial Gram positive bacteria that is transmitted from sow to piglets and causes birth diarrhea. Many other bacteria cause increased mortality, such as Salmonella spp. Keeping the number of pathogenic bacteria low before farrowing and during lactation is essential for high lactating sows and low piglet mortality.
